History
Picture the year 1948, a time when Efacec came into existence through the collaboration of Belgium's ACEC and Portugal's CUF. However, this wasn't where their story began. The roots trace back to 1905 when the Modern Mechanical Sawing Society took its first steps. Fast forward to 1948, a year that marked the onset of a new era. It was the result of significant stakeholders like Electro--Moderna, ACEC, CUF, and the visionary leadership of Antonio Ricca Gonçalves. Efacec was born, and the journey of the Efacec brand commenced.
1958 was a significant year, as ACEC acquired the majority share, a position that held strong even after Efacec made its debut on the stock exchange in 1969. The company experienced phenomenal growth between 1966 and 1973, expanding its manufacturing facilities 2.5 times and witnessing a six-fold surge in order demand.
In 1976, Efacec ventured into drive systems, a pivotal moment when they delivered Portugal's largest three-phase transformer, an astonishing feat considering its colossal weight of 450 tons. Financially, Efacec underwent a transformation, with revenues skyrocketing from 4 million escudos in 1981 to an impressive 237,753 million Euros in 1998.
In 1999, Manuel Gonçalves Textile (MGT) entered the scene, followed by the José de Mello Group (JMG) in 2000, reigniting the legacy of the CUF Group. The year 2003 marked a strategic shift for Efacec, with a reclassification of their activities into three vital domains Energy Solutions, Transport Solutions, and Engineering Services Solutions.
Fast forward to 2020, and Efacec's financial fortunes had been completely reversed, with profits of 4.3 million euros, a remarkable turnaround from previous losses of 20.5 million euros. In the same year, Efacec reported revenues of 431.5 million euros, with exports contributing significantly, representing 76% of the total revenue.
In August 2017, Efacec secured an international project to construct a subway in Odense, Denmark, underscoring their expertise in electromechanical elements. This project, valued at around 47 million euros, was a collaborative endeavor with COMSA and MUNCK, showcasing the breadth and depth of solutions offered by Efacec. It built upon their prior involvement in subway projects in Bergen, Norway, Dublin, Ireland, and Porto, Portugal, with the European market constituting half of their turnover.
October 2018 saw Efacec clinch a substantial tender for level crossings in Europe, launched by Trafikverket, the authority responsible for Sweden's railroad and road infrastructure. Efacec, in partnership with a local entity, secured a contract estimated at five million euros annually, becoming the most significant export contract in this segment for the company.
In February 2019, just a year after the inauguration of Efacec's Electric Mobility Unit, this segment had grown substantially, doubling its turnover to 36 million euros. It also expanded its workforce, tripled its production capacity for electric vehicle fast and ultra-fast chargers, and contributed 6% to Efacec's total activity at the beginning of 2019.
July 2020 brought a significant development as the Portuguese government temporarily nationalized 71.73% of EFACEC due to legal actions against Isabel dos Santos, the controlling shareholder, and the freezing of her assets in Portugal. The governments aim was to ensure the company's short-term viability, with eventual plans for reprivatization.
