History
The journey of Bosch commenced in the quaint backyard of Stuttgart-West as the "Werkstätte für Feinmechanik und Elektrotechnik" (Workshop for Precision Mechanics and Electrical Engineering) on November 15, 1886. In the following year, Bosch introduced a low voltage magneto designed for gas engines.
Bosch's significant involvement with automotive technology began in 1897 when it started installing magneto ignition devices in automobiles, establishing itself as a reliable supplier for ignition systems. A pivotal moment arrived in 1902 when the chief engineer at Bosch, Gottlob Honold, unveiled the high-voltage magneto ignition system with spark plugs.
In 1901, Bosch inaugurated its first factory in Stuttgart. By 1906, the company had produced its 100,000th magneto. In that same year, Bosch introduced the progressive eight-hour workday for its employees. The year 1910 marked the founding of the Feuerbach plant, located near Stuttgart, where Bosch initiated the production of generators and headlights under the brand name "Bosch-Light" in 1914, showcasing an innovative lighting system presented a year earlier.
The onset of motorization in road traffic led to remarkable growth for Bosch after 1900. With a workforce of just 45 in 1901, the company had expanded to over 1,000 employees by 1908.
In 1913, Bosch established an apprentice workshop to recruit and train young talent for the production of automotive electrics. Bosch's global footprint started taking shape in 1898 with the opening of a branch in London, and subsequently, branches in Paris, Vienna, and Budapest in the following years. By 1909, Bosch had formed trading partnerships on every continent, extending its reach to places like New York, Sydney, Buenos Aires, Shanghai, Rio de Janeiro, and Tokyo.
Bosch's expansion beyond Germany began with the opening of a factory in Paris in 1905, followed by one in Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1912, marking its presence on another continent.
In 1917, Bosch transitioned into a corporation, remaining so until 1937 when Robert Bosch reclaimed sole ownership by buying back the company's shares. This shift in ownership structure also saw the company become a limited liability company (GmbH).
Following World War I, Bosch lost a number of its foreign properties. including its factories in the United States. Howeve the business started a sizable rebuilding effort for its international operations.. This involved signing contracts in Asian and American areas and setting up sales offices in places like Calcutta, India.
