The roots of the Volvo brand trace back to May 1911 when the trademark was registered for SKF ball bearings. The term "Volvo," derived from Latin, meaning "I roll," was intended for a new series of bearings. However, SKF opted to use its initials as the trademark for all bearing products. The true journey of Volvo as an automotive pioneer began in 1926 when Assar Gabrielsson and Gustav Larson, inspired by the vision of creating robust vehicles capable of withstanding harsh Scandinavian conditions, initiated the construction of a Swedish car.

In 1927, the first Volvo car, the ÖV 4, rolled off the production line, marking the official commencement of Volvo's venture into car manufacturing. The following year saw the introduction of the successful "Series 1" truck. The company's growth accelerated, with the acquisition of Svenska Flygmotor in 1942 and the incorporation of Pentaverken in 1935, ensuring a reliable supply of engines and expanding into the marine engine market.

Volvo's diversification continued with the launch of the B1 bus in 1934 and the entry into aircraft engine production in the early 1940s. Notably, Volvo played a pivotal role in producing the Stridsvagn m/42. In 1963, the company expanded globally by establishing the Volvo Halifax Assembly plant in Canada.

The 1950s marked significant acquisitions, with Volvo acquiring Bolinder-Munktell, a construction and agricultural equipment manufacturer, later renamed Volvo BM.
