LEVITON

Overview

Since its inception in 1906, Leviton Manufacturing Company, Inc. has been a significant player in the American electrical equipment manufacturing landscape.. Leviton, which specializes in a wide range of electrical products, is well-known for its dedication to innovation and quality. Electrical light sockets, switches, dimmers, outlets, power cables, occupancy sensors, wall plates, datacom solutions, and other products are part of the companys diverse product portfolio.

In 1973, Leviton made history by introducing the iconic Decora wall switch. With its flat, low-profile design this ground-breaking product revolutionized the industry by providing a modern alternative to traditional toggle switches. Surprisingly, the term Decora has come to be synonymous with decorative paddle switches throughout the industry, confirming Leviton's enduring influence.

History

Founded by Isidor Leviton in 1906, the company embarked on its journey by crafting brass mantle tips for the gas lighting infrastructure in New York City. The humble beginnings saw Leviton selling their products from a pushcart on the bustling Bowery in the Lower East Side. In a pivotal move, Isidor Leviton designed a screw-in lamp holder for Thomas Edisons electric lamp in 1910, marking the company's early foray into the electric lighting landscape.

The 1920s witnessed Leviton's relocation to Greenpoint, Brooklyn, and in 1936, the company erected its own expansive factory and warehouse. an important milestone occurred in 1947 when Leviton acquired the American Insulated Wire Company, broadening its offerings to include wires, cables, and cords.

Under the leadership of Harold Leviton, Isidor's son, who assumed the role of president and CEO in 1965, the company continued its ascent. Leviton's influence extended globally as they acquired Deal Electric Company in 1950, expanded to Canada with the acquisition of Hale Brothers in 1953, and delved into fluorescent lighting production.

In a strategic move in 1973, Leviton relocated its corporate headquarters to Little Neck, Queens, and continued its expansion through acquisitions. Notably, in 1999, Leviton added stage lighting controller manufacturer NSI Corp. to its repertoire.

As the company entered the new millennium, Donald Hendler and Stephen Sokolow, sons-in-law of Harold Leviton, assumed key leadership roles. Leviton's commitment to innovation remained unwavering as it partnered with major automotive players such as Ford Motors and Toyota to manufacture electric vehicle chargers.

Leviton introduced it's Universal Dimming device line in 2012, resulting in significant energy savings. Leviton's entry into the home automation sector was marked by the acquisition of Home Automation Inc. in August 2012, which was later rebranded as Leviton Security & Automation.

With over 25,000 products and systems for both home and commercial use, Leviton is a leader in innovation, employing about 6,500 people and operating in more than 85 countries on six continents. The trajectory of Leviton bears witness to its unwavering dedication to quality and progress within the electrical sector.
