History

Predecessor Companies

The foundations of ABB Ltd. trace back to two pioneering electrical companies: Allmänna Svenska Elektriska Aktiebolaget (ASEA) and Brown, Boveri & Cie (BBC).

ASEA: Founded in 1883 in Västerås, Sweden by Ludvig Fredholm, ASEA initially specialized in manufacturing electrical light and generators. ASEA grew as a significant player in the electrical equipment industry.

BBC: In 1891, Charles Eugene Lancelot Brown and Walter Boveri established Brown, Boveri & Cie in Zurich, Switzerland. The company swiftly became known for its AC and DC motors, generators, steam turbines, and transformers.

Formation and Early Years

In August 1987, ASEA and BBC announced their merger, resulting in the creation of ASEA Brown Boveri (ABB). This fusion formed a global industrial entity with a revenue of around $15 billion and a workforce of approximately 160,000 employees.

When ABB commenced operations on January 5, 1988, its primary operations encompassed power generation, transmission, distribution, electric transportation, and industrial automation. In its inaugural year, ABB made significant acquisitions, expanding its scope and reach in various sectors.

During the late 1980s and early 1990s, ABB underwent substantial expansions, particularly in Central and Eastern Europe and the Asia-Pacific region. The company's strategy aimed at targeted growth and increased investment in emerging markets.

Shift in Business Focus

As the 1990s progressed, ABB shifted its focus, gradually divesting from certain sectors to concentrate more on areas like renewable energy, transmission, and distribution. The company ventured into robotics, automation, and emerging technologies, positioning itself for future market trends.

The introduction of groundbreaking products and services became a hallmark of ABB's progression. The company brought innovative solutions to the market, including the world's first commercial high-voltage shore-to-ship electric power, industrial automation systems like Extended Automation System 800xA, and collaborative robots such as YuMi.

Global Expansion and Strategic Acquisitions

ABB expanded its global presence, developing products and services catered to various industries. The company engaged in strategic acquisitions, notably acquiring Alfa Laval's automation unit, Elsag Bailey Process Automation, and Baldor Electric, aligning with its strategies to enhance market share and technological capabilities.

The company's expansion wasn't confined to manufacturing and automation but also included ventures in transportation, power generation, and renewable energy sectors. Initiatives like the creation of ABB Daimler-Benz Transportation and forming joint ventures for high-voltage direct current (HVDC) system solutions showcased its diversification.

Transformation and Recent Developments

In recent years, ABB has navigated transformations, selling divisions like Power Grids to focus on core automation and power technology businesses. This change in strategy aimed to support the evolving needs of the industries it serves, aligning with technological advancements and market demands.

The company's journey includes partnerships, new acquisitions, and initiatives, such as becoming the title partner of the ABB FIA Formula E Championship and the acquisition of smart home automation provider Eve Systems. Additionally, ABB has initiated projects addressing environmental concerns, including partnering with the Well Done Foundation to monitor methane and greenhouse gas emissions from orphaned wells in the United States.

In December 2022, ABB inaugurated a robotics mega factory in Shanghai, representing a significant investment in the field. Moreover, in June 2023, the company announced its agreement to acquire smart home automation provider Eve Systems, reflecting ABB's commitment to innovation and expansion into emerging markets and technologies.

Products and Services

Electrification: ABB's Electrification division offers a wide range of products and services, from substation to socket, catering to various industries, utilities, commercial, and residential buildings. The division focuses on areas such as renewables, e-mobility, data centers, and smart buildings.

Certifications & Compliance

ABB has a long-standing record in the industry, but it has faced legal challenges in the past. It has settled cases related to bid rigging and the US Foreign Corrupt Practices Act in different years. In 2022, the company faced allegations and penalties for violations of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) in a bribery scheme in South Africa, resulting in significant financial penalties and settlements.
